As a few months of the year 2023 have passed us new trends begin to appear, and a great way to transform your home in 2023 is to get new tile installed. Whether they are used on floors, shower walls, fireplaces or even back splashes in your kitchen, tiles can show and add instant style and personality to your space. In past years, tiles have been confined to a specific shape, size or dimension with monochromatic tones of white and gray, this year in 2023 experts predict that homeowners will not settle for the norm but that they will experiment with a wide variety of new and bold styles. Here are the 8 tile trends designers cannot wait to see and that will transform your living space into a new level.
Handmade Tile
Handmade tiles shot to fame in 2019 and there is no evidence of this trend slowing down any time soon in fact it appears as if it were picking up. Lyndsay Moore, the Principal Designer at The Lynden Lane Co. said “The kitchen backsplash and tile trends for 2023 are handmade and natural elements.” The best part about handmade tiles is that no two are exactly the same and this creates an artisanal and organic look as well as creates a very inviting and comforting environment in your homes.
The owner and principal designer at Sarah Barnard Design LLC, Sarah Barnard couldn’t agree more stating the handmade tiles “have a more personalized look that celebrates the craftsmanship and process of tile making.” The beautiful thing about handmade tiles is that the natural variations in color and texture add an incredible amount of dimension to any space.
Decorative Pattern and Mosaics
Decorative pattern and mosaic tiles are filled with a wide variety of bold colors and patterns which have been trending in home design in 2022 as well as continuing into 2023. “Decorative tile can look illustrative, turning a wall into a work of art. Patterned tile can become a visual focal point, while more neutral colors can keep the tile from becoming busy or overpowering,” says Barnard. If you don’t want to commit to an entire wall of decorative or patterned tile, then choose a small accent wall to feature a mosaic or decorative print and use a simple tile in a complementary color or shape in the remaining space.
High Gloss Tile
High Gloss tiles are a fabulous way to make any room feel bigger and brighter as they always naturally reflect light. Many designers predict that homeowners will begin opting for the high-shine finishers to help create that illuminating and warm effect in the bathrooms and kitchens alike. Sarah Barnard has also said “metallic tones or metal accents in tile can also bounce light for a decorative shimmer that can feel special and beautiful in the home space.”
Natural Stone
Incorporating natural stone in your home has been gaining tremendous traction over the past few years especially biophilic design and from the looks of it, it’s not set to go out of style anytime soon. Biophilic design is a design style that draws from the natural world. This involves incorporating materials, colors, and visuals that occur in nature into one's home. When it comes to the various tile trends, many experts have agreed that homeowners will continue natural stone tiles made from a variety of materials such as marble, granite, limestone, travertine and slate. Not only are these tiles classy, sophisticated and timeless, but they are also very easy to maintain and are also very durable.
Textured and 3D Tile
Three-dimensional and textured tiles or some may it tactile tile, is also set to go on an upward trend throughout 2023. “Textured, decorative tile can create a sculptural effect for visually dramatic and striking walls,” says Sarah Barnard. It’s a phenomenal and easy way to add some depth and visual interest into a room without going berserk with patterns or colors. In addition, there is an abundance of various textures to choose from. As previously mentioned, ‘perfectly imperfect’ or organic handcrafted tile has been very popular, however geometric and metallic designs are also very trendy.
Statement Backsplashes
Statement backsplashes are set to be a really big trend in 2023 and the next several years, said Lyndsay Moore. While kitchens are mainly designed around countertops and cabinetry, she also mentioned that we are expected to see more and more kitchens being centered around the statement of the backsplash. We are seeing super dramatic statement pieces for kitchen backsplashes. The antithesis of subway tile is about to have a moment. Keep an eye on stones like Breche Fantastique from the stone house Antolini,” said Moore.
Monochromatic Checkerboard Patterns
Monochromatic Checkerboard pattern tiles have been used by people of all cultures throughout history. Many designers say that they are looking forward to the more monochromatic and muted take on the classic black and white pattern. We all know the classic black and white tile patterns but how great would it be if we were able to get a more subtle contrast? Especially for those people who really like to stick to the neutral palettes but still want to try something new and different, this up-and coming trend can definitely be a fun one to try out.
Unique Shaped Tile
Lastly, as homeowners continue to grasp at the various bold design choices, many interior designers predict that tiles that will have unique shapes and sizes will be all the rage in 2023 projects. Kate Simpson interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors says “Instead of selecting a classic rectangle tile, I see more people leaning towards funky forms.” She also points out WoW Design’s Aquarelle O pill-shaped tile and Fireclay’s Chaine Homme Tiles are amazing examples of the type of unique tile shapes that we can expect to be made popular by homeowners over the next few years.
